How Role Play Can Increase Your MLM Sales

First, I should probably explain what I mean by role play.  I don’t want you to come into this exercise thinking about your kids playing dress up to play the role of princess or the more wicked (a grown up) acting out a fantasy with a sexual partner.  That’s not the kind of picture I want you to have.  

Of course, now that I have put those pictures in your mind, I have to wonder if I should delete this part of the post and start over.  I’ll leave it for now. 

Let’s continue by looking at the words themselves.  When someone assumes a ‘role’, they play a part in a specific situation.  ‘Play’ means that the role is taken on in a safe environment.  A place where you can be inventive as possible, creating you own reality.  When done for business, role play allows you to experiment with your knowledge of what happens in the real world and develop your ability to handle any situation that may come up during your sales process.

Why Role Play Is Important To Increasing Your MLM Sales

Role play is very useful in helping a network marketer to learn how to handle a variety of situations.  It can also help the MLM’er that is afraid of using the telephone because they might mess up and say the wrong thing.  Role playing puts you in a realistic situation but also gives you the opportunity to make mistakes that don’t cost anything.  Probably the biggest reason to role play is so that you can identify any sales skill gaps that you may have as a network marketer and correct them.

Role playing as a sales tool can help you to manage any stress that you may feel when you are communicating with your prospects.  If you feel stressed at all during your sales process, you may shoot from the hip and lose control of the sales cycle.  By practicing your script and role playing a network marketer will be prepared to respond to the prospects questions and thereby increase your MLM sales success.

2 Role Playing Tips To Increase Your MLM Sales

  • Don’t make it easy.  As a network marketer, you have to learn to be able to handle the pressure of your prospects probing questions.
  • Make a list of the top objections that you have received while selling your MLM product and use them during your role playing sessions.  When you role play with someone else these objections, you will see how another network marketer would have handled the situation.

Role Playing Examples

I role play at least once a week with another strong network marketer.  I recorded the last time we got together to practice prospecting and then I edited it a little bit so that you wouldn’t have to listen to us talk about our kids and stuff.  I think I cut out all of the swear words too, sorry that can happen when you get frustrated and mess up even when you know what you are doing, things happen.  That’s why as network marketers it is important to role play to keep your sales skills sharp and ready for the real deal.

Do you follow up with your prospects enough?

We all know that you have to form some sort of a relationship with our prospects in order to gain their trust so that they will feel comfortable buying from us.  If you are marketing your MLM product or service on the Internet, then forming that relationship is harder to do than when you are talking with your prospects one on one over the telephone or face to face.

That’s why using an autoresponder is so important.  Effectively using a solid autoresponder sequence can help you to build that trust.  Like the kind of trust that can double the sales of your MLM products.  The kind of trust that turns visitors into dollars.

Here are two pieces of autoresponder advice that most network marketers don’t take, and even if you don’t take action on the offer at the end of this post (yes, I’m going to sell you something), you will get a lot of value by just correcting these mistakes.

  • Mistake #1 – most network marketers make the mistake of not having a autoresponder.  This is a huge mistake.  I know that signing up with a system like Aweber (who I highly recommend and wrote about in my post on creating a relationship, you can read that by clicking here) will cost you some money every month but the network marketer that earns the most trust is the marketer that will make more money.  Sending your list useful emails will work at drawing your prospects toward you and your MLM product.

What’s the most important thing to any network marketer?

 

Before you try to sell your MLM product or service, you must first be able to sell yourself.   In order to sell yourself, you have to have CONFIDENCE in your MLM company, your MLM product or service, and most importantly, in yourself.

 

Where Does Confidence Come From

 

For the most part, confidence often comes through having positive experiences.  Well for network marketers that could mean disaster.  With more than 95% of network marketers never making a dime with their MLM Companies, there had better be another way to gain confidence.

The good news is that you can also gain confidence by looking for a way to do something that you believe you can do.  The key is having the belief that YOU can do it.

 

 

 

 

One of my customers, who wanted to learn how to add 20-30 people a week into their network marketing business, felt reluctant to make cold calls.  Why?  Because he hated getting those cold calls himself.  I’m sure you know what I mean.  You pick up the phone after it rings just to hear a long pause, then some telemarketer comes on the line and asks for you by name (which they usually mispronounce) and then they try to keep you on the phone for as long as they can by talking so fast as to not give you a chance to say anything.

 

I mean, the very thought of making cold calls like that can be very humiliating to anyone.  But just because the majority of telemarketers seem to give all network marketers using the telephone a bad name, doesn’t mean you have to be afraid of making cold calls.

 

Boost Your Confidence And Your Sales

 

How do you get past the fear and move into a state of confidence?

 

Practice, practice, practice.  Think about someone who doesn’t know how to swim.  If you don’t know how to swim, you may have some fear when it comes to jumping into the deep end of the pool.  How do you overcome that fear?  First, you learn to swim and then you practice what you learned until you are confident enough to jump into the deep end.

 

The same goes for network marketing.  If you have never used the telephone before to make your MLM sales, you may be a little afraid of sounding like one of those pesky telemarketers.  But you don’t have to.  With the right prospecting script and some practice, you can be very confident in using the telephone and make as many sales as you want.

 

When you practice, you will become familiar with what to do by doing that thing enough times to know exactly what the results will be.  The fear stops (or at least subsides) when you take consistent action over time.

 

So practice your prospecting script and your closing script.  Know it backwards and forwards.  Memorize it

 

Can you imagine what would happen to your confidence, if every time you picked up the phone to prospect, you made money?

Marcia’s Email Marketing Method And How To Avoid Her Mistakes

I received an very interesting email this morning that I would like to share with you.  It really displays how far some network marketers will go to find free leads for their business.  It really is a great example of what NOT to do.  Unless of course, you have nothing but time on your hands and you don’t mind wasting it.  Here’s what happened…

I checked my email this morning to see that I had gotten an email from what appeared to be a gal that is a member of my Mahjong group.  I thought that there might be another game coming up soon that I may want to join.

For those of you that may not know what Mahjong is let me give you a little background.  Mahjong is a game for 4 people played with tiles.  It’s similar to the card game “rummy” but it’s played with tiles that have Chinese characters.  You are probably more familiar with the solitaire version that you can play on your computer.  Our Mahjong group gets together a few times a month in order to play with other people that like to play the game.

What Does Mahjong Have To Do With Network Marketing

Well if you have something to sell that Mahjong players may be interested in, then I would have to say that there is a big connection.  So, I opened the email to see who when and where this game was taking place.  But instead, I read that Marcia lost 40 pounds after having 3 kids and wanted me to check out her diet blog and tell her what I thought of it.  Well, my first thought was that Marcia is a network marketer in real need of some education in the art and science of marketing.  And since I provide that sort of thing I should give her a call to see if I could be of any assistance.  Of course, she doesn’t actually leave any contact information on her website so there is no way to call her to even buy her product if you were so inclined to do so.

What Did Marcia Do Right

I don’t want you to think that Marcia totally missed the mark when she sent out this email to me and I can only guess to how many other people in similar groups.  Here are the characteristics of a typical Mahjong player:

  • 3 out of 4 will be women
  • Typical age will be 40-65
  • Most are or were blue collar workers
  • Most have children

For the most part there are very few men in our group and you know what happens when you get a bunch of women together in the same room.  Yep, they talk, share ideas, secrets, good books, recipes, and how they lost a bunch of weight.  So, Marcia wasn’t completely wrong to think that Mahjong players might be her target market.  However, she went about it all wrong.

What Marcia Did Wrong

It’s a lot easier to fix something when you know what went wrong, so let me share a few things with you that you may want to consider if you are looking for free leads like my friend Marcia.

  • Share your MLM product and your expertise only with people that are actively looking for a solution to a problem
  • Design a marketing strategy with your target market in mind (if you are targeting Mahjong players, then your strategy should be based on a face to face meeting while you are playing the game)
  • Make sure that your prospect can reach you for more information or to purchase more of your MLM product
  • Don’t lie or stretch the truth in order to create “hype”

Prospecting lottery by talking, emailing, calling random people is inefficient, unprofitable and frustrating.  Talking to people that have either asked you for more information or have done (or bought) something in the past that lets you know they may be interested in what you have is are far more effecient use of your time.  Trying to build your lead list with random people that don’t even qualify to buy your product is not a good way to build your network marketing business.  Remember, you can always make more money but you can never make more time.
